The 2023 Academy Awards: Full List of Nominations and Major Takeaways

After much anticipation all across the film industry, the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were finally announced this morning. As with any nominations announcement, it was a roller coaster of highs and lows. For anyone who is looking for a gateway into the awards race so far, here are some key takeaways from today's livestream:
  • After a sudden surge of online support from celebrities like Edward Norton and Charlize Theron, Andrea Riseborough has earned a nomination for Best Actress for her performance in "To Leslie". The film was a quiet independent production, which has made this nomination one of the first in history to come about specifically as a result of social media campaigning. This is a big deal because in the past, campaigns mainly just centered around in-person events or parties.
  • Paul Mescal earned himself a surprise nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role for his role in "Aftersun". Although this was another independent film, it garnered a strong reputation due in part to Mescal's memorable and vulnerable performance. He is shaping up to be a major star in the making!
  • Although his time in the film is short, Judd Hirsch is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in Steven Spielberg's "The Fabelmans". This marks the longest amount of time that an actor has gone between Oscar nominations (42 years). Hirsch is also the second oldest actor to ever be nominated in an acting category, at 87 years old.
  • "Everything Everywhere All At Once" accumulated 11 total nominations across all categories. This is the most of any film this year. This includes representation in 3/4 acting categories, that being Michelle Yeoh as the current front-runner in Best Actress in a Leading Role, Jamie Lee Curtis AND Stephanie Hsu in Best Supporting Actress, and the current front-runner in Best Supporting Actor, Ke Huy Quan.
  • After two consecutive years of women winning the Best Director award, all of the nominees this year are male. There were many strong female voices in contention for the award this year, with the favorites being Sarah Polley ("Women Talking"), Gina-Prince Bythewood ("Woman King") and Charlotte Wells ("Aftersun"). Their omission from the category is the most important snub of the year.
